Margherita Santoro, DDS, MA

Dr. Santoro holds a D.D.S. Degree from Columbia University, New York, and she has been practicing Orthodontics since 1992. At Columbia University Dr. Santoro also earned her 3-year Orthodontic Degree and a Master Degree in Dental Science, and was later recruited as a member of the teaching staff in 1998.
As an Associate Professor, Dr. Santoro was chosen in 2005 for the position of Postdoctoral Program Director of the Division of Orthodontics. She held the position she held until 2011, when she transitioned to full-time private practice in Acton, Massachusetts. She still maintains a part-time affiliation with Columbia University for research purposes. Her duties as a Program Director included direct supervision of dentists as they treated patient in a large clinical setting, in their pursue their post-graduate training in Orthodontics. She also designed and upgraded on a regular basis the specialty academic curriculum, and supervised the clinical testing of newly introduced materials and techniques.
Her role has placed Dr. Santoro in the position of being exposed over the years to all the recent technological innovations and biological discoveries concerning the orthodontic profession.
Thanks to the excellent relations with the Columbia University teams -and practicing in Manhattan for 14 years before moving to MA- offered an unique opportunity to treat , with an ethical and compassionate approach, many patients affected by very complex malocclusions, requiring special treatment and requesting second opinions. Dr. Santoro expertise ranges from interdisciplinary treatment for children and adults, to customized treatment plan for the patients who presents with the most complex orthodontic problems, including surgical and growth related problems, and medically compromised patients. Her role has placed Dr. Santoro in the position of being exposed over the years to all the recent technological innovations and biological discoveries concerning the orthodontic profession.
She also functioned as the responsible Orthodontist of the Craniofacial/Cleft Palate Team at Columbia University/Presbyterian Hospital, where she collaborated with surgeons, geneticists, speech therapists, physicians and pediatricians, psychologists and ENT specialist to provide the appropriate care for young children affected by craniofacial syndromes.
Dr. Santoro research activities have focused on the study of metal alloys, in cooperation with the School of Engineering at Columbia University, and Root Resorption as a consequence of orthodontic treatment. Her publications have been included in the mandatory reading for the American Board of Orthodontics Exams, and she has been honored with several awards, including the election to invitation-only institutions such as the E.H. Angle Society of Orthodontists and the Glenda Garvey Society, the Orthodontic Alumni Award for Clinical Excellence and the Award for Research Excellence.
In 2004, Dr. Santoro was the recipient of the Subtenly, Baker, Eastman Award from American Association of Orthodontists Foundation (AAOF).
Dr. Santoro has lectured extensively both nationally and internationally, she is Past President of the Columbia University Orthodontic Alumni Society, and she served on the Editorial Boards of the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Angle Orthodontist, World Journal of Orthodontics, and Orthodontic Practice.

Alan Berko, DDS
Dr. Berko received his Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Orthodontics from the Goldman School of Graduate Dentistry at Boston University in 1981. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Case Western Reserve University in 1973 and his Doctor of Dental Science (D.D.S.) degree also from CWRU in 1977. Dr. Berko has been practicing orthodontics in Acton since 1981. Originally an associate of Dr. Jack Flanagan, Dr. Berko has been a sole practitioner since Dr. Flanagan retired in 1990. He is an active member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the American Dental Association and the Massachusetts Dental Society.
Dr.Berko's most recent and exciting project wass to earn a Master of Public Health at the University of New Hampshire.
Alan Berko was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. and moved with his family to New Jersey when he was five. He played baseball and soccer in high school where the soccer team was state champs for two of the three years he played. He continued to play soccer at CWRU until his junior year. Alan met his wife Peggy while in dental school and they moved to Massachusetts shortly after graduation. Dr. Berko practiced general dentistry for two years before he went back to school for two more years to specialize in orthodontics. Alan and Peggy have lived in Acton since 1981 and have two sons. Peggy works as an COTA in the Acton-Boxborough School's special needs program. Jeff graduated from Wesleyan University and is now continuing his education at Tufts University. Alex graduated from Quninnipiac University with a degree in computer science. He now lives in West Hartford, CT at Travelers Insurance working in its IT division.
The Berko family enjoys the cultural activities of living near Boston and the changing seasons in New England with plenty of outdoor activity. Among his many interests and activities Alan enjoys golf, skiing, hiking and car racing. Indoors, he spends a lot of time reading. Dr. Berko has volunteered for many years as a coach for baseball and soccer and was a board member for the Acton-Boxborough United Way.
